To say Hope Stirk keeps busy is an understatement. Amidst her volunteering and participating in her church group, she loves to quilt. It's what she did every day, until one day things suddenly went dark. "I was putting my quilts back on the rack and I just collapsed," explained Hope Stirk. An hour later, Hope woke up and mustered up enough strength to drive to her husband, who said the left side of her face had dropped. "I knew what he was saying but I couldn't talk. He asked me something else and it was the same thing. So he said don't even take your coat off, I'm taking you right to Rochester," said Stirk. When they arrived at Rochester Regional Health, their fears were confirmed: Hope was having a stroke. Her doctor, Tibor Bescke said the blood clot needed to be surgically removed - immediately. "There was a relatively large territory of the brain that was deprived of blood flow. Having said that, a lot of that was still salvageable," Dr. Bescke said. Recovery from stroke procedures can take anywhere from days to weeks, but because Hope's husband recognized the signs - it saved her life. "Essentially, if somebody's face is asymmetrical and their arm is not moving and they can't speak well, then they are just going to have to call EMS because time is of essence," he stated. It's been about 7 months since Hope's stroke. She's quilting everyday; loving life more than ever. "When we went to leave he went to shake my hand and i said "you know you're not going to get away with a handshake, I need a hug," she laughed. To learn more visit: http://www.strokeassociation.org
